Challenge
OUI’s vision is to reduce global blindness by 50%. There are approximately 44 million people worldwide who are blind. More than half of these cases are due to lack of access to eye care. For example, in one rural area of Nepal, there is no eye hospital and not a single ophthalmologist for a population of 300,000. Patients must travel two to three hours to get eye care at a hospital. Due to this shortage of ophthalmologists, the world is full of patients without immediate access to the care they need. Preventable eye diseases are exacerbated for this reason.
Idea
OUI focused on non-ophthalmologists in areas lacking dedicated specialists. What if general physicians could examine patients instead of ophthalmologists? Smart Eye Camera is an attachment that allows eye examinations to be performed using a smartphone. The device converts LED light into diagnostic lights, allowing early detection of cataracts and other conditions by non-ophthalmologists around the world. Its price and ease of use have made possible what other similar products could not.
Result
Smart Eye Camera has been introduced in approximately 60 countries and regions, with over 170,000 eye examinations conducted as of December 2025.
